A collection of weird stories that the bibliographer E. F. Bleiler described as "one of the most important works of American supernatural fiction". He would go on to call Chambers "The single most important writer in the weird fiction genre between Poe and Lovecraft." Of the three printings with the title and copyright pages both dated 1895, this is generally accepted as the second printing with the frontis photo depicting the author painting at his easel and with two pages of ads at page 318. 16mo. 316 pages - Bound in publisher's original green cloth stamped in brown with the Neely monogram on front cover, butterfly on rear, top edge gilt and others untrimmed. Corner and spine tips bumped with some darkening to the spine and some toning to the cloth edges. The interior is clean and unmarked with some offsetting to the endpapers and some toning and some chipping along the outer untrimmed edges. Overall, a very collectible copy of Chambers 1895 classic collection of Supernatural Horror with the accompanying manuscript letter signed by the author.
