Rare Antique Print "Smith Rescued by Pocahontas" - 1874 Chromolithograph

Description: This is an 1874 chromolithograph by the German lithographer Christian Inger (1814-1895) after a painting (now lost) by the British artist Edward Henry Corbould. The lithograph was produced in two versions, one in black ink, and this premium, color version with gold gilt outline, title and text. It's in remarkable condition and scarce. The small text at the bottom left reads: H Schile, 10 Division St., NY, and on the right, the script reads: “...accord'g to act of Congress in the year 1874 by H Schile in the Office of the Librarian of Congress in Washington D C.” The center title reads: "SMITH RESCUED BY POCAHONTAS." Depicted is Captain John Smith, about to be executed. Pocahontas is leaning over Smith to intercede and her father Chief Powhatan stands behind Smith, with his hand raised to stop his brother Opechancanough from killing Smith. There are several inaccuracies in this romantic depiction, but they reflect common assumptions by Victorians about this John Smith-Pocahontas myth, and about American Indians in general. The imaginative clothing, weaponry, regalia, horses, and background tepees are more reflective of the Western Plains Indian culture. And Pocahontas would have been only 9 or 10 at the time, so she's overly nubile for an adolescent girl. The details are fascinating, and the condition of the print is excellent with no tears, no folds, no stains, and only very minimal and faint foxing. I believe this is not merely a lithograph, but a chromolithograph which is a type of color lithograph characterized by saturated, high-gloss color covering the entire sheet. It's made by a more time consuming and costly method involving a stone for each of the colors. Photos were taken through glass and some reflections are visible. Not examined out of frame. SIGHT: 15.5" X 19.5" FRAME: 21.5" X 25.5" WEIGHS: 6.2 lbs. The black frame has several chips to the gesso and black paint. Some chips have been retouched.
