After the minstrel and variety days Mr. Powers joined a stock company at the Eighth Street Theatre in New York, the town of his birth.A year here directed his talents, and he began to play parts in productions.In 1880 he was Chip with Willie Edouin in Dreams, or Fun in a Photograph Gallery, then the Policeman Evangeline,and again with Edouin in A Bunch of Keys.Edouin took him to London, where he played in A Bunch of Keys, in several plays with the Vokes family,Chilperic at the Empire in and as the Emperor in DickWhittington, the Drury Lane Christmas pantomime of 1884.He came home and played Rats in A Tin Soldier; principal comedy parts at the Casino in Madelon, Nadjy The Yeoman of the Guard. The Drum Major, and Erminie,and starred for four years in A Straight Tip, A Mad Bargain, Walker, London, and The New Boy, which were allfarces. For five years from 1897 to 1902, he was leading comedian at Daly's Theatre in that popular series of imported English musical pieces which included The Circus Girl, The Geisha, La Poupée,A Runaway Girl, San Toy, The Messenger Boy, The Jewel of Asia,and The Princess of Kensington.His appearances sincehave been in The Medal and the Maid, a term in vaudeville, and as a star in The Blue Moon, and Havana.” James T. Powers (1862 – 1943) was a stage actor, vocalist, and lyricist. Powers began on the stage in Boston in 1880 and also spent time in circuses and later, in vaudevilles. In the 1890s, he acted in many American versions of the so-called Gaiety musicals, originating in the London's West End, then coming into vogue in the United States. His entire career was spent almost entirely in live theatre, with his bow-out being thestar-packed 1935 revival of Seven Keys to Baldpate withGeorge Christie George M. They toured together in several productions. The Powers made their home in the Ansonia residential hotel in New York City.Power’s autobiography, Twinkle Little Star was published in New York in 1939.
