Echinopsis Flying Saucer stems C, cured, mostly rootless segments FOR EXPERTS

Description: Background on Flying SaucerIf you look at my listings, you'll see I always have cute little Schick or Johnson type Echinopsis hybrids for sale. Those are adorable (mostly) dwarf cacti that rarely get higher than the knee on an Oompa Loompa. That's NOT what this is.Echinopsis Flying Saucer is considered by many to be, simply stated, one of the best Echinopsis hybrids there are. Well, I grow a whole lot of Echinopsis, and while I'm not sure I'll go that far, I will admit that this is truly an absolute top notch plant. If something happened to all my 'Flying Saucer' plants, I'd absolutely have to get new stock from SOMEPLACE. You just can't not have it. It is a really massive plant, with stems about as thick as your leg, and with enormous--ENORMOUS flowers several inches across. A mass flowering day is really something that will fill your phone with pictures. You can't help yourself. Look at the auction photos if you don't believe me! In my climate I can grow it both in pots and in the ground. But don't grow it too close to pedestrian pathways, because if you do it is likely to be stolen after the pig-eyed thieves see in in flower. Being a large plant, Flying Saucer tends to do things a little on the leisurely side, so buds are produced at a pace more slowly than I'd like! Every now and then I'll patrol my plants, and pull off buds to root. As soon as I pull the buds, I cure them by putting the buds in the proper orientation (root end down), in an empty pot, for a week. This cures the wound created during the process of separating the plant from the parent. After a week, I pot the bud in a pure mix of pumice, and leave it alone, in a bright area on my cactus benches. After about a month, every week or so, I'll dump the pot out and look for roots. Once I start to see roots form, I transfer the bud into my normal growing mix (which has about 30-50% organic material), and water (sparingly at first, while the root system is small). . These are spectacular plants. But don't think they'll fit on your shelf next to your little little Schick hybrids. These will require room in order to be happy. You've been warned. Why the EXPERT rating in the sale title???I get lots of requests for this hybrid, so I am willing to put some unrooted divisions on sale. Note that these are completely unrooted cuttings. If you buy one of these, I'm assuming you are adept at rooting Echinopsis. Really, it's not hard, and usually just takes some patience. But if you're new to Echinopsis, or cactus growing in general, I recommend you stick with rooted plants. One thing about rooting Echinopsis...sometimes the rooting stem, as it takes its time to root, gets some corking marks on it. Sometimes these are small localized dots about 5-10 mm in diameter, sometimes it's extensive corking covering part of the stem. I don't like it, but that seems to be the deal with rooting these. At worst, you might just root the stem, accept it as being ugly, and then when it starts making lateral branches, after a while just remove the ugly progenitor stem. That's what I've done on occasion. Incidentally, I don't mark down plants because they are not yet rooted. That is because I know, with reasonable care, my unrooted stems will invariably root. So they're the same value to me as rooted plants. They're just sitting on my benches, like my rooted plants. Same same same. The sale specimens Overall summary: great specimens, very clean. There are two cuttings, and I'll sell them in order of largest to smallest. I notice that both cuttings already have small rootlets developing! Interesting.Cutting type (top cut, pinch point): pinch point. Cutting length: 19-24 cm (7.5-9.5 inches)General cultivation This plant is quite easy to grow, as long as you know a bit about cacti. I grow this plant in full sun. If you grow them in heavy shade they don't do well. I let the plants get well over 110 F (43 C) during the summer, so they can take a lot of heat! They can take winter temperatures at or slightly below freezing, but be careful. As long as they get below 40F (5C) in the winter, they flower vigorously in the spring and summer. Some of the plants can even take a cold, wet winter, but I recommend you experiment on spares before you risk anything very valuable. After about two years, in good conditions, a young plant will begin to branch. They'll grow well in any standard cactus cultivation system. Plants in my cultivation are treated with insecticides only if needed. The only insecticides I use on my landscape plants are spray-downs with isopropyl alcohol. If that doesn't work, I chuck the cactus. As such, I only grow landscape plants that are naturally very bug resistent. As such, this specimen should be considered reasonably pest-free. I will NOT sell a plant if I find mites or mealy bugs on them. However, as always, suitable pest precautions should be taken in incorporating them into your collection or landscape. The plant is adapted to bright sun in central California. However, shade it lightly for a few weeks after receiving it. I find that this plant is quite easy to grow. I do not buy plants to quickly turn them around and resell them. I know all the plants I sell---most have resulted from normal propagation of my collection plants. If you have questions about growing them, please do not hesitate to ask. I will provide a short care sheet with the plant, too. Shipping in extreme conditionsThe plant will be shipped bare-root--they're perfectly fine with that. Please ensure that your shipping address will not expose the boxed plant to extreme conditions. Mailboxes in full sun can become dangerously hot, and I will ship to cold climates at your risk. During winter months, you can buy heat packs from me---they have their own listings.I work to fulfill orders as soon as I can. If you want me to hold off on shipping, I will, but note that once you pay I must ship within 3 days, otherwise eBay gets mad at me.Combined shippingIf you purchase multiple items from me, I will combine them into a single box and you'll pay less for shipping. My eBay business is small enough I'll notice you have purchased multiple items. Please pay for everything upfront, when I box everything up I will calculate the new shipping charges, and refund you the difference via PayPal. Unhappy? If there are problems with the plant when it arrives, please discuss it with me so I can make things right with you (instead of giving my eBay account a bad review).
