Description: This is one of the most heavily embossed bottles I know of. This elixir was first sold by a New York wigmaker, “Professor” Alexander Barry, in 1842 (although he claimed his father invented it in 1801). It was 97% alcohol, with the rest consisting of cantharidin (Spanish Fly, it is made from cantharidin, an extremely toxic substance produced by blister beetles) and castor oil. Like some modern shampoos, the “tingling sensation that tells you it’s working” when applied to skin (actually the disruption of transmembrane proteins holding cells together) was thought to cure baldness, make hair luxurious, and prevent graying and dandruff. It also could be used to treat skin diseases and wounds and heal ailing glands and muscles. It soon proved wildly popular. It is an aqua bottle that stands 6” tall and 2” across with HEAVY embossing all around “BARRY’S TRICOPHEROUS FOR THE SKIN AND HAIR NEW YORK DIRECTIONS IN THE PAMPHLET”. It has a hinge mold bottom typical of 1880s production. The glass is thick and heavy with some really large bubbles on the front and in the base. It rises to a slender neck with an applied tapered collar lip. Very crude. It was buried for a long time and has some hazing inside and out as well as some rust stains but no damage. It has everything you would expect from an OLD bottle.
