About the Book: For a bride to wake one morning and find that she has inherited seven fully-grown sons can be disconcerting, almost as disconcerting as having a guest sweep a freshly-baked cake into her basket when you offer her a slice. But things like that happen in Samoa, which is where Fay Calkins found herself after marrying her chief. She met him in the Library of Congress, which seems to be about the only conventional part of their romance. In Samoa, however, she learnt how to enjoy being unconventional, and also how to live. A troubling fact about her charming but unpredictable new life was that in a land abounding in breadfruit and constantly visiting relatives no one seemed to worry about money, so Fay diligently tried to improve conditions through such ventures as a craft co-operative and a credit union. They proved fatally vulnerable, however, to the native notions of profit and loss. Similarly, while these happy, friendly folk appeared impervious to the logic of accounting, they were remarkably ingenious at evading anything resembling work. And raising her own children in this South Pacific paradise uncovered further pitfalls, which she recounts with disarming candour. Feasting, singing, dancing, storytelling and the freewheeling pursuit of romance are obviously the favoured occupations of these untrammelled people, and the author writes of her life among them with a wry regard for practicality but also with warm appreciation. Despite the conflicts that inevitably arise when two cultures meet, Fay Calkins discovered that it was she and not the Samoan who had much to learn about enjoying life. And in conveying her experiences she has given us both entertainment and a broader perspective on our fellow humans. Copyright © 2018-2024 TDM Inc.
