1862 Virginia Currency - Battle of Chancellorsville – Civil War - 5007

Description: Original hand signed 1862 “Sixty Cents” fractional note issued by “State of Virginia, City of Richmond”. The note has a hand inscribed serial number which has faded, it has the plain back. During the Civil War the hoarding of copper, silver and gold (Hard Cash) resulted in little coinage in circulation. The only way to “make change” was to issue these type notes. The Battle of Chancellorsville was fought from April 30 to May 6, 1863, near the village of Chancellorsville. Two related battles were fought nearby on May 3 in the vicinity of Fredericksburg. The campaign pitted Union Army Maj. Gen. Joseph Hooker's “Army of the Potomac” against an army less than half its size, General Robert E. Lee's Confederate “Army of Northern Virginia”. The scene “Battle of Chancellorsville” was reprinted from the lithograph by Kurz & Allison. Kurz and Allison were major publishers of chromolithographs in the late 19th century. They built their reputation on large prints published in the 1880-90 period depicting battles of the American Civil War. This was a period of recollection among veterans, and the company was trying to capitalize on this sentiment. In all, a set of thirty-six battle scenes were published from designs by Louis Kurz, himself a veteran of the war. They did not pretend to mirror the actual events but rather attempted to tap people's patriotic emotions. Comes as shown mounted in a 8” x 12” Riker style case with glass front. All of the artifacts are guaranteed to be original Civil War issue or as stated. A hand signed and dated “Certificate of Authenticity” will be issued by Collectors Frame with a photograph and description of the items purchased. Please see our "About Collectors Frame”, below the reviews on the front page, for more information on the framing and artifacts.
