1861 Parish of St. Landry Louisiana $5 Dollars Warrant Note - Exceedingly Rare

Description: Early Civil War issue. This a very rare warranty note, or banknote issued in Opelousas, Louisiana for the Parish (County) of St. Landry, named for St. Landry of Paris. Opelousas was the Parish Seat. St. Landry was one of the original 19 parishes in 1807 and run by a form of government called a Police Jury. There were 47 parishes in Louisiana in 1861, and this one was sparsely populated with only about 23,000 people. The note is signed (as issued) on the front and countersigned on the reverse. Thanks for looking. Please see my other auctions.
