An ORIGINAL early-19thc. copperplate-engraved map published in Edinburgh in Thomson's New General Atlas, 1817. A cartographically important and rare map showing the southeastern portion of America. A very large Georgia, bordered by Louisiana, west of the Mississippi. Ohio, also, with no western border. Native American tribes are noted throughout, as well as Forts; along with additional notations: "Principal Hunting Country of the Western Party and Six Villages" "A Coal Mine half a mile long in the Bank of the River" Also interesting to note that the state of Tennessee spelled: TENASSEE; and West Florida, encompassing Mobile and New Orleans. Upper left: View of Hudson River Scenery. Original handcolor; Fine old paper. Excellent clean, crisp impression. Tape reinforcement on back to lower centerfold (about 2").
