Description: This chair has been in my family for 7 generations. I had it appraised and learned the following history. We know definitively that your chair was American-made in the very early 1800s in Southern Massachusetts, specifically Bristol County or Plymouth County. It is a fanback side chair with mixed woods, H stretcher, turned legs, and old, but not original paint. The chair is unmarked, but made by a craftsman in the area. The inscription in white paint of "1720" on the bottom is probably either an invoice number or item number by the person who re-painted the chair black much later in the late 1800s or early 1900s, and that same person most likely wrote "Gilbert" on the chair as a notation that Mr. or Mrs. Gilbert was the client to whom the chair belonged. The chair is in good antique condition. There is a small gouge to the front of the seat and a medium gouge to the back of the seat. Both gouges have been painted over. One of the legs has come loose from its through-hole, but there is no wobble to the chair and it remains sound.
